About:

Student Council members and other volunteers from Island Park’s Lincoln Orens Middle School played the roles of “Little Doctors” during the district’s blood drive on Jan. 25. They were eager to lend their helping hands and support the New York Blood Center by escorting participants, writing thank you cards and giving out bracelets, stickers, snacks and juice to donators.

“Student Council and fifth graders are working towards a brighter future,” said student council advisor Jillian Betancourt. “They are volunteering their time to help spread the word about the need for blood donors. The lessons they’ve learned through their community service, and through observing how our community comes together to give, was a priceless experience for them.”

As a result of the students’ efforts and community’s participation, 40 pints of blood were donated – the equivalent to 120 lives saved. There were 26 whole blood donors and seven platelet donors.

The Little Doctors Program is organized by the New York Blood Center and is designed for faculty members and students at elementary and middle school levels to increase their knowledge and understanding about the science of blood and the body’s circulatory system as well as to learn about volunteerism and community service.
